Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of self image that affects post-event rumination in social anxious college students. High and low socially anxious college students(N=64) were randomly assigned to hold either a negative or positive self-image prior to giving a speech. Participants completed State-Anxiety Inventory(STAI-S) and Post-Event Rumination Scale(PERS) immediately after speech followed by imagery manipulation. And this whole questionnaire were repeated after a week. The result showed that as the participants had higher level of social anxiety, they had higher level of anxiety, and negative post- rumination. And this result lasted a week. Both groups of high and low level of social anxiety with negative image before speech showed significantly higher level of STAI-S than those who had positive image, but this result didn¡¯t last a week. The effect of negative self image that affects STAI-S and PERS in the group of high level of social anxiety was not significant for both when tested right after speech and a week later. And the effect of negative images in the group of low level of social anxiety was not significant too, but negative post rumination increased after a week of the speech.
